Inventory and Memories

I originally intended for this blog to exclusively feature my fictional short stories and musings regarding said tales, but sometimes I feel like writing about other things that cross my mind.

The other day I was doing an inventory and inspection of my archery equipment and while doing so I ended up taking a stroll down memory lane.

Decades ago I was heavy into archery. So much so that my mother and sisters joked that I single-handedly kept Cabela’s and Gander Mountain catalog companies operational through my archery equipment purchases. When I was 18 years old I was living in Grand Prairie, Texas. On Highway 303 a sporting goods store opened. I waited a few weeks until the crowds died down before I opted to shop there. One particular morning I went in there fully intending to spend about $10 and no more than $25 on new archery equipment.

I took about four steps inside the front door of the store and this cute little gal about my age greeted me with the biggest, prettiest smile I had seen in a long time. She walked me around showing me items that were on sale and I followed her around like a lost puppy dog. By the time she was done with me I had a gigantic shopping bag stuffed with things I didn’t even need. I had spent $175 in there, and that was in the mid-1980’s when that amount of money would be $300 to $400 in today’s funds.

I later found out that little filly was the store owner’s daughter. I’ve heard of excellent salesmanship skills, but she was crazy good at her craft. I never went in that store again because I was afraid of what she was going to talk me into buying the next time.

So, beware, guys. Pretty smiles will often separate you from your money quite quickly.

Rivals

z_fight

I am in the process of building up a Kill Team for the Heralds of Ruin game representing the Red Corsairs Renegade Astartes force based in the Maelstrom.

My original intention was to create a lead character who was a sorcerer who had a crow as a familiar and a pet attack wolf. After some thought I opted to create two characters and split the animals up. One of the characters will be an Aspiring Champion who has the attack wolf. The other will be a sorcerer with the familiar. I see these two characters being rivals who fight for the same cause, which is to do the bidding of their master, Huron Blackheart, Chapter Master of the Red Corsairs. Even though they both seek similar results, each has his own agenda for doing so. I still don’t even have names for these two individuals, but hopefully that’ll be addressed soon.

Hydration

I recently had a health-wise wake-up call.

Late last month I was at work at the prison and was quite busy. I had a stack of work that needed to get done, so I was moving from project to project without delay. Don’t get me wrong, I was grateful for the workload because it was making my shift fly by at Hyperdrive speed. I just forgot to stop for a few seconds between assignments to drink water. THAT, ladies and gentlemen, was my undoing.

It was hot that day. (Summer in Texas is HOT.) The temperature was in the high 90’s (F) with a heat index of about 107 (F). That, combined with the fact that I did not drink enough water, caused my blood pressure to spike. I don’t remember the exact numbers, but they were sky high. My heart felt like it was going to burst through my ribcage and dance a jig on top of my chest. The doctor in the prison clinic opted to send me to the hospital because he thought I was having a heart attack.

After the ER doctor, Doctor Disney (yes, folks, that was his name), ordered two blood tests, he determined that I had gotten too hot and was quite dehydrated. So, I’ve put myself onto a special diet. The diet consists of low carbs, low sugar, more vegetables and lean protein and LOTS of water. I’m taking my younger son’s dog on walks when it’s not quite so hot in the day. I’m also taking time to walk around the housing unit more often as well.

I have to remind myself to drink water BEFORE I get thirsty. If I’ve waited until I’m thirsty, I’ve waited too long. If I’m not thirsty, drink water anyway. Hydration, hydration, hydration.

Besides, a hydrated mind is a creative mind.

And We Have a Winner . . . and a Runner-up

In case anyone was interested, I’ve decided the Red Corsairs Chaos Astartes space pirates will be my primary Kill Team for Heralds of Ruin. They’ll represent a small detachment led by one of Huron Blackheart’s lieutenants. These command officers are known as the Hounds of Huron.

I also decided to create a second one representative of one of the many Rogue Trader dynasties, just in case I might want to play a game as a pro-Imperial faction.

Kill Teams

I’ve recently been introduced to a new version, if you will, of the Warhammer 40,000 (WH40K) hobby by a good friend and coworker. It’s called Heralds of Ruin Kill Team (HoR-KT).

This new game is an unofficial expansion of the WH40K game known and loved by wargamers across the globe. Since it’s unofficial, Games Workshop does not recognize it, but that does not diminish its appeal and potential fun in my opinion.

Unlike “regular” WH40K, where you’re more often than not in command of dozens of miniatures, HoR-KT uses between five and ten miniatures to play. In my opinion, this allows for more intimate, narrative-driven games and also offers gamers/modelers the opportunity to devote more time and attention to assembling, converting and painting each miniature, making each one unique.

I downloaded, for free, all the rules and faction lists last week. From what I remember, there are approximately 42 lists to choose from.  All I have to do now is pick a handful of factions to create Kill Teams for.  I originally wanted to build up at least a dozen of them, but after thinking it over, I decided to limit it to a few factions.  I ideally would like to keep it to one, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.  I believe the final list of lists will come down to the following:

  1. Chaos Space Marines
  2. Space Wolves
  3. Deathwatch (Alien Hunters for the Inquisition)
  4. Dark Eldar or Eldar Corsairs
  5. Inquisition

If I can limit it to two or three Kill Teams, I think I’ll be happy. Just for kicks, I’ll probably build a Loyalist Space Marines Kill Team for my younger son because he likes the Imperial Fists Astartes Chapter and I may end up creating one for my older son representing the Adeptus Arbites (Imperial Police) because he loves all things law enforcement.

Happy modeling.

What I Learned From Triceratops

  • dinosaur-47924_960_720In case you didn’t already know, my favorite dinosaur is Triceratops. What I learned from them was that if you’re willing to  take care of family and friends, they’ll likely take care of you in return. I also learned to not go looking for trouble, but if trouble finds you anyway, you should have the knowledge and equipment necessary to defend yourself and those you care about.
